  • SHRI SAMIR S. SOMAIYAChairman & Managing Director

    Shri. Samir Somaiya graduated from Cornell University with a Masters in Chemical Engineering in 1992. He secured a MBA from Cornell University in 1993  and a Masters of Public Administration from Harvard University in 2005. He won the American Institute of Chemical Engineer’s Award for Scholastic Achievement in 1989 and the American Institute of Chemists Award in 1990.

    He joined Godavari Biorefineries Ltd in 1993.  He has taken the company forward through a focus  on economic, social and environmental sustainability supported by research and innovation.

    Continuing the heritage of his father and grandfather, Shri. Samir Somaiya plays an active role in initiatives that improve the quality of life of the underprivileged sections of society.

    Under his guidance the  Somaiya Trust manages over 30 different educational institutions of learning extending from elementary to Ph. D. in diverse areas such as medicine, engineering, the arts and sciences, religion, vocational studies, education, languages, etc. There are over 35,000 students and 1,300 faculty. There is also a 500 bed urban teaching hospital, and a 40 bed rural hospital. The Trusts jointly run 8 schools, 6 of which are in rural Maharashtra and Karnataka.

    Shri. Samir Somaiya is the President of  Somaiya Vidyavihar; Chairman of K. J. Somaiya Trust, K. J. Somaiya Medical Trust, K. J. Somaiya Institute of Applied Agriculture Research and The Girivanvasi Pragati Mandal.

    As Visiting Instructor in the School of Chemical Engineering at Cornell University, he combines his love for education and Chemistry. He has played an active role in the Sugar and Chemical Industry in India. From 2006- 2008, he was the Chairman (Western Region) of  Indian Chemical Council, and  the President of the Indian Sugar Mills Association in 2009.

    He is a Committee Member of the Green Chemistry Initiative, Constituted by the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Prime Minister; Advisory Board, School of Chemical Engineering, Cornell University, USA; Center for Indic Studies, University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, USA and Council of Religious Leaders - Astana, Kazakhstan.

    Shri S. N. Bableshwar, a graduate in Chemistry and Post Graduate in Sugar Technology is an Associate Member of Institute of Chemical Engineering from Jadavpur University, Kolkata.

    Shri S. N. Bableshwar began his relationship with the company over 40 years ago. His progress to being the Director (Works) at Sameerwadi, Godavari Biorefineries began with when he joined as a Lab Chemist and through his experience and expertise he has contributed in every role that he has taken.

  • DR. B.R. BARWALENon-Executive Director

    Dr. B. R. Barwale, Chairman of Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company Limited (Mahyco) is widely known as a visionary, prominent entrepreneur, philanthropist and educationist. With an agricultural family background, Dr. Barwale's passion for contributing to this sector and to the country's growth has largely defined his work over the years. He is widely regarded as the father of the Indian seed industry and has received several awards for his contribution to the agriculture industry, including the 12th World Food Prize by the World Food Prize Foundation in 1998 and Honorary Life Membership to Federation International Seedsmen (FIS), the international apex body for the seed industry.

    Dr. Barwale was awarded the Padma Bhushan award in March 2001 in recognition of his distinguished service of high order in the field of Trade and Economic Activity. He has written two books during the course of his career: ‘My Journey with Seeds and the Development of the Indian Seed Industry’ and 'Bhoomi Putra'.

  • MR. UDAY GARGInvestor Nominee Director

    Mr. Uday Garg has been Investor Nominee Director of the Company since March, 2015 representing Mandala Capital AG Limited.  Mr. Garg is the founder of Mandala Capital, a private equity fund manager, and has served as managing director since its inception in 2008. Previously, he was a portfolio manager at Duet Group, Altima Partners and Amaranth Advisors, and began his career as an investment banker with Deutsche Bank. Mr. Garg holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics with a concentration in finance from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

    Shri Vinay Joshi is a Post Graduate in Commerce with specialization in Financial Accounting and Cost & Management Accounting from the University of Pune. He has been associated with diverse industries including Sugar, Ethanol, Chemicals, Food Processing, Power and Book Publishing and has been associated with the Somaiya Group of Companies for over 35 years in various capacities.

    Shri Vinay Joshi has been unanimously elected as President of The South Indian Sugar Mills Association – Karnataka (SISMA-K) for 2 years (2016 & 2017).  He represents the interests of sugar industry before the Central and State Government authorities in India. He was Vice President of SISMA(K) from 2013 to 2015.

    He is a committee member of Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) and also a member of  Maharashtra Finance and Taxation Panel  of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

    Shri Vinay Joshi has  successfully managed mergers, consolidation and acquisitions proposals in the fields of Sugar, Ethanol, and Ethanol based chemicals.

    He has represented the Somaiya Group at various International and national bodies including industries association, Chamber of Commerce and various Govt. authorities.

    Shri S. Mohan, a graduate in Applied Science from Madras University, has more than 35 years of experience in major alcohol and alcohol based chemical industries. He is the Director (Works) at Pentokey Organy India Ltd. since 2010 and is also the Director at Sakarwadi, Godavari Biorefineries Ltd.

    Shri Kailash Pershad is an Engineer with over 40 years of experience in finance, marketing and management . He is an adviser and consultant to corporates and was a nominee director of ICICI, IDBI and UTI.

  • DR. K. V. RAGHAVANIndependent Director

    Dr. K. V. Raghavan is the Vice President (Academic and International Cooperation) of Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) and Federation of Asian Biotechnology Association (FABA). Dr. K. V. Raghavan is also the Member of Atomic Energy Regulatory Board and the Director of Heavy Water Board (Govt. of India), Mumbai, and is the Chairman of Project Review and Monitoring Committees of DRDO on catalytical ethanol reforming, nanofluid systems and other strategic projects. He is the member of the Apex Committee for R&D in the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India.

    A Fellow of the National Academy of Engineering, Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE) and A.P. Academy of Sciences and a Distinguished Fellow of University of Grants Commission (UGC) he has published more than 120 papers, filed 45 patents and edited 3 books.

    He completed his B.Tech from Osmania University in 1964; M.S. and Ph.D from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras. He joined CSIR service in 1964 and was appointed as the Chairman of Recruitment and Assessment Centre of DRDO, Ministry of Defence, Government of India in May 2004.

    He was the member of Scientific Advisory Committee of the Ministries of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Health of Government of India. He was represented on the high level committees of Govt. of A.P on natural gas utilization and establishment of pharma research and development fund. He was the past President of Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers and A.P. Academy of Sciences.

    Dr. Preeti S. Rawat is a Professor (OB/HRM) at K.J. Somaiya Institute of Management Studies & Research (SIMSR). She is handling teaching assignments for various management courses and is Doctoral (Ph.D.) Guide for the subject of Management in distinct Indian universities.

    She is the Editor of 'Business Perspectives & Research' which is SIMSR's international management journal published by SAGE Publications. Dr. Rawat has published her work in many national and international journals and has participated in multiple international conferences. She has also written a book on 'workplace empowerment'. Her research interests are leadership, empowerment and diversity. She engages with the industry by providing behavioural training programmes to junior, middle and senior management.

  • MR. WERNER WUTSCHERNon-Executive Director

    Mr. Werner Wutscher, a graduate in Law Karl-Franzens-University in Graz and a Master’s degree from the Harvard Kennedy School, USA is an expert on sustainability.

    He is a Member of the Board of respect, the Austrian Business Council for Sustainable Development; Vice-President of the Ökosoziales Forum Europe and President of the National Park Hohe Tauern. He also works as consultant and business angel in the start-up area. Presently, Mr. Werner also serves as director on different boards in Austria, and Amman.

    Dr. Paul Zorner has a Ph.D. in Botany and Plant Pathology from Colorado State University where he worked on development of cropping systems for dry-land agriculture.

    Dr. Paul Zorner serves as a Director or Senior Advisor for several companies and venture firms involved in the production of renewable fuels, chemicals and other high-value biomaterials generated from agricultural biomass. He has extensive international experience and expertise especially in Sugar and Chemical industries in the field of production, engineering, factory operations, plant cultivar selection and forward technology licensing and implementation, government relations, policy, off-take agreements and sustainability strategies and developing business plan. Dr. Paul has rich experience in scientific development, operations and senior administrative positions with start-up and Fortune 500 companies in the field of agriculture, chemicals and renewable energy.

    Dr. Paul is a Fellow of the Weed Science Society of America. He is an inventor on over 35 issued US patents. He was named in 2006 as a Queensland Champion by the Queensland, Australia Government (the first American citizen to be so honored).
